On Thursday 3rd May we welcome local voters to the polling station on our school site. This week coming is Climate Week. The children will be visited by polar scientists on Tuesday to learn more about the effects of climate change. On Wednesday we are encouraging everyone to walk to school (or park and stride) and members of the Eco Team will be carrying out a travel survey in the morning. Year 5 and 6 are delighted to welcome the distinguished astrophysicist to school on Friday. They have been learning all about the Solar System and exploration and it will be fantastic to have the chance to ask questions of someone at the forefront of discoveries about space.

On Thursday we will be raising money for Sue Ryder Care by having a fun hair day. We will still be wearing school uniform, but with interesting hairstyles. The donations will go to help our neighbours the Wheatfields Hospice. For more information, see the newsletter last week or our posters around school. Thank you.

The Friends of Shire Oak Primary School held their first meeting of the year this week. There was a good turnout, with lots of new faces. We are planning to serve tea and coffee before school on Friday next week (30th September) and are also busy planning for the car boot sale on Saturday 15th October. It has been delightful to hear from so many of last year's Year 6 pupils who have started at their High Schools this autumn. They look very smart in their new uniforms and we are pleased to hear that many of them are already impressing their teachers, enjoying their learning and earning credits. We hope they will continue to stay in touch with us.

We will be visited by 3 inspectors on Tuesday and Wednesday. We have sent out the parents questionnaire by pupil post and by email, but if you do not have a copy please ask at the office on Monday. We are looking forward to sharing with them all the work we have been doing to improve our school.

Well done to Mrs Ellis, Mrs Lyall and Mrs Chohan in the kitchen. An unannounced spot check from the catering agency has placed them in the top 9 school kitchens in Leeds and in the top 3 in our area. They were tested on hygiene, nutrition and service standards. Our school dinners are getting better and better!

We have had a few phone calls about the snow. We are still open although we understand that each family will have to make their own decision about how best to get children home safely. School is open as usual. Children will need to wrap up warmly (it's -7 degrees Celsius at the moment!), bring spare clothes so they can enjoy playing out without worrying about sitting in wet clothes afterwards and take lots of care on the icy pavements.

Well done to all the children teachers and staff who have made it into school today. Children are working well and are spending some of the day in usual classes and some of the day working in mixed age groups on a variety of problems and tasks.

The plan for tomorrow (Thursday) is to open school with the staff that can walk in. Children will work in House Teams to do activities like teaching the younger children board games, problem solving, singing and competitions. We will text parents and carers if we have to change this plan.
